Key information:
Religious Education makes a distinctive contribution to the school curriculum by developing learners’ knowledge and understanding of religion, religious beliefs, practices, language and traditions and their influence on individuals, communities, societies and cultures. It enables pupils to consider and respond to a range of important questions related to their own spiritual development, the development of values and attitudes and fundamental questions concerning the meaning and purpose of life. Religious Education is an essential component of a broad and balanced education.
Religious Education is concerned with the deep meaning that individuals and groups make of their experiences and how this helps them give purpose to their lives. It provides opportunities to explore, make and respond to the meanings of those experiences in relation to the beliefs and experiences of others as well as to one’s own experiences.
Curriculum Intent
The RE curriculum aims to engage learners within a five-year learning journey, each year building on the previous, covering both knowledge and understanding of religion, culture, and global issues. We aim to teach our learners to become inquisitive about moral and ethical issues by helping them to learn about religion through interactivity.
Our curriculum enables all students to build on prior knowledge and understanding of beliefs and practices in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism and secular beliefs such as Humanism. Learners will develop a secure subject-specific vocabulary and a greater grasp of literacy through reading opportunities embedded into every lesson and opportunities for extended writing into each unit of study. Learners of RE will have opportunities in lessons to reflect on their learning and their own personal beliefs. The use of big questions help to build on learners’ current knowledge and understanding of world issues and the varying views surrounding them.
As part of learners’ understanding of moral and ethical concerns, we promote British values and, Lyndon virtues and embed the values of kindness and empathy. Our curriculum is rich in more than just knowledge: learning in RE also takes place through art and music. Ultimately, our goal is for learners to choose to put their understanding into practice both in the community and in society.
