Key information:
Maths is one of the core subjects in secondary education, but it is more than a subject that everyone in school needs to take: it is essential in today’s world.
Mathematics has been called “the universal language”. It is a powerful tool for understanding the world around us and our perspective of the important issues facing us as individuals, families, businesses, and nations. Maths surrounds us; we see and use Maths skills every day–from balancing our expenses to our jobs; from retailers to builders, lawyers, accountants and doctors. Everyone needs some level of mathematical knowledge.
Mathematics has evolved over many centuries to help solve problems. Maths teaches us to think logically; to identify and state the problem clearly; to plan how to solve the problem; and then to apply the appropriate methods to evaluate and solve the problem. The logic and quantitative reasoning attained in Mathematics courses help us make better decisions. Learning how to solve hard challenges, whether they be complex mathematical problems or one of the many other challenges you face, is a skill that will be used throughout your life.
