Lyndon learners visit Bletchley Park as part of an enriching induction
Year 7 learners at Lyndon School, part of the Summit Learning Trust family, enjoyed an ‘inspiring start’ to their secondary school journey, with a special educational trip to Bletchley Park this week.
The entire year group headed to the historic home of Britain’s World War 2 Codebreakers –with the trip fully funded by the school and a generous grant from Bletchley itself.
During a guided tour of the site, learners walked through the famous huts where the painstaking work of cryptography took place, and were introduced to the fascinating history of how the codebreakers deciphered enemy messages, contributing to one of the most significant intelligence victories in modern history.
They also participated in a bespoke programme of educational events designed to link past innovations to the modern world of technology. Workshops focused on the importance of cybersecurity in today’s society, emphasizing how lessons from Bletchley Park are still relevant in our digital age.
Learners explored how encryption methods have evolved and why safeguarding information in the digital world remains a vital concern for governments, businesses and individuals alike, as well as developing their skills in problem-solving, teamwork and the application of logic and mathematical thinking – skills that are as important today as they were during the war.
Syreeta Kapswara, Head of School, Lyndon School, said:
“We are thrilled to be able to offer such an inspiring start to secondary school for our new Year 7 learners. Bletchley Park not only offers a glimpse into one of the most pivotal moments in history, but it also helps our learners see the connections between the past and the challenges we face in the modern world. Cybersecurity is more important than ever, and this trip has allowed our learners to understand the impact it has on their everyday lives. It was also a wonderful opportunity for our newest learners to strengthen friendships and forge new ones.”
“The trip to Bletchley Park is just one example of Lyndon School’s broader mission to provide its learners with enriching, hands-on learning opportunities that go beyond the classroom. We are very grateful to Bletchley for their generous grant, which helped make this possible.”
