Lyndon School Hosts Lush Cosmetics for Ethical Business Talk
Learners from Lyndon School in Solihull, part of the Summit Learning Trust, have taken part
in an interactive workshop with Lush Cosmetics this month. The cosmetics giant is well
known for its sweet smelling shops filled with bath bombs, shower and bath products and
many other types of toiletries.
Lush Cosmetics is well known for its ethical vision and charitable focus, the business started
in 1995 and was set up by six co-founders. The company is 10% employee owned and its
ethos is that businesses should put more back into the world than they take out, they want
to demonstrate that capitalism can be a force for good.
A group of business learners from the school heard all about how the business was set up
and how it developed itself as one of the leaders in ethical based products, such as their
bath bombs. The group were astounded to learn that Lush has donated over £100 million to charities over the years, enabling them to put into practice their understanding of ethical
decision making and how important sustainability is to the planet.
The learners also learnt about the effort that goes into making products and how this links
to manufacturing decisions that businesses have to make. They then got to make their own
Halloween themed bath bomb which they then packaged to take home.
Learners thoroughly enjoyed the session with Logan commenting I cant believe all Lush
products are made by hand and can make up to 1000 bath bombs a day, that takes real
commitment! Harry added I enjoyed learning about the naked products – its amazing that
no packaging is used for so many products.
At Lyndon School, the aim of the Business curriculum is to develop learners’ understanding
of how the local, national, and global economy works through analysing economic issues,
problems and institutions that affect everyday life. The goal of the Business curriculum is to
equip learners with the appropriate knowledge and skills needed to develop their
employability and identify business problems and opportunities.
Head of School, Syreeta Kapswara said:
“I want to start by thanking the staff from Lush who took the time to come along and speak
to our learners. It was clear how fascinating they found learning about the history and the
evolution of the business and they thoroughly enjoyed making their own spooky bath bomb
too! At Lyndon School we really try and bring subjects to life and this visit from Lush was a
great way for our Business learners to hear all about what makes a successful and ethical
company.”
