Letter and Information for Parents 13th July 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,                                                                                                            

As the school year is coming to its close, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of Lyndon School through what has been an extremely demanding year.  As I write to you, we are actively finalising our planning for the year ahead and we are confident that the school will open to all students in September 2020. On the basis that there is no change to the current mandatory expectation for all students to return to education at the start of the autumn term, we will reintegrate students back gradually over the first couple of weeks using the following format: 

  • Year 7 in September 2020 will return full time from Thursday 3rd September 2020.
  • Year 11 in September 2020 will return full time from Friday 4th September 2020.
  • Years 8, 9 and 10 in September 2020 will return full time from Monday 7th September 2020.

Staggering the start of the school year will enable school leaders and teachers to provide students with a programme of induction as well as outline how the curriculum has been adapted and strengthened.  We are confident that this will help the transition process post lockdown.  In addition to staggering the start of the term as described above, students, for the first term, will also follow a slightly modified school day to reduce congestion at both the start and end of school.  The temporary changes are listed below:

  • Students in Years 7,8 and 9 starting September 2020 will start school at 8:40am and will finish school at 2:45pm.  On Tuesdays start at 8.40am and finish school at 2.00pm.
  • Students in Years 10 and 11 starting September 2020 will start school at 9:00am and will finish school at 3:00pm.  On Tuesdays start at 9.00am and finish school at 2.00pm.

Whilst we recognise that these changes may cause some disruption, we are confident that that they are necessary to ensure that congestion is eased around peak times and students can use public transport more safely.     In addition to the changes above, we will continue to ensure that we:

  • Act to reduce the risk any spread of infection between individuals by strictly ensuring that anyone who is unwell with symptoms coronavirus (COVID-19), or has someone in their household who does, does not attend the school.
  • Provide staff and students the opportunity to clean their hands thoroughly and use anti-bacterial-gel more often than usual.
  • Promote good respiratory hygiene using the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach.
  • Maintain a programme of enhanced cleaning using standard products such as virucidal and antibacterial sprays.
  • Consider practical ways to minimise the contact between individuals to support social distancing wherever possible. Whilst the school will be doing its utmost, it is equally important that parents/carers ensure work through with their children the importance of being responsible at all times. 
  • Review risk assessment in light of changing advice and circumstances.

I have attached guidance for all parents and carers to review and work through with your children.  In addition, Mr Bohdanowitsch will be writing to all parents next week to share further practical information that will help students take active responsibility for their own and the safety of others.

Whilst I am writing, I want to let you know that we have recently undertaken an external assessment of the school as part our bid to become re-accredited with the Inclusion Quality Mark.   I am delighted to inform you that following a rigorous examination of the school in which, all aspects of education were fully explored, Lyndon School has been successful in obtaining its re-accreditation. I have attached a copy of the assessor’s initial letter which outlines the strength of our inclusive ethos and the progress the school continues to make.  This is a fantastic achievement and is a testament to the effective partnership between the school, its students and our families.  On behalf of the staff and Governors, I would like to thank every parent and carer for their ongoing support for the school; thank you.

As we look forward to welcoming a new cohort of Year 7 students in September, the end of this term also means that we will be saying farewell to a fantastic cohort of Year 11 students.  Whilst we have been unable to celebrate in our time honoured tradition, staff have kindly put together their farewells in the form of a special video.  If you haven’t had the opportunity to look at it yet, I wholeheartedly recommend that you do.  The farewell can be  accessed using the link https://t.co/1a3A2b70Go?amp=1

The school has now submitted centre assessed GCSE grades to awarding bodies for our Year 11 students and we eagerly await the publication of results on Thursday 20th August 2020. Given that we are expecting social distancing rules to be relaxed further, we are hopeful that we will be able to provide results in the usual way (at school) on the morning of the 20th August 2020.  Please watch out for final confirmation via our website closer to the time.  On behalf of all staff, I would like to wish all of our Year 11 students a fond farewell, and best wishes for the future. 

Remote education and in-school keyworkers provision will end on Friday 17th July 2020 at 12 noon for the summer break.
