At Lyndon, whilst we do not have an explicit theme driven curriculum, there are certain core values that underpin the way that we behave, and provide a positive influence for students.
Throughout their five years at Lyndon, students the our ethos and values underpinned by the curriculum and a range of extra curricular activities will afford students with the opportunity to learn to:
• Treating others with tolerance and respect.
• Be inclusive and accepting of difference.
• Engage with others with generosity, particularly when they are in difficulty.
• Aspire for the highest standards.
• Behave with honesty and integrity.
• Show respect for each other, our community and their learning environment.
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy – values of:
• the rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect
• tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
|The democratic process.||The principle of democracy is routinely being reinforced at Lyndon School, with democracy processes being used for important decisions within the school community, for instance, whole school assemblies to promote the UK Youth Parliament and all students having the opportunity to vote for the UK Member of Youth Parliament for Solihull. Five Lyndon students have stood as candidates for the UKYP in the last four years as a result of the information being provided and support given by staff. Following a recent survey of students who voted for changes, elections are now held for representatives to the Student Council.
The principle of democracy is also explored through the teaching of Citizenship, as such students are taught to understand their personal rights and freedoms, and how these should be exercised safely.
Students are informed about and encouraged to attend Solihull Youth Council and the Heartlands Trust Youth Forum so as to be a part of the democratic process locally. Students are also provided with the opportunity to learn about different models of democracy and take part in votes, pupil voice questionnaires and pupil councils. Topics such as anti-homophobia, equal rights, and e-safety are explored.
|The rule of law||The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at our school.
Students are taught the rules and expectations of the school, which are highlighted by Behaviour for Learning, and student expectations.
Students are taught the value and the reasons behind laws that govern and protect us, this includes the responsibilities involved and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service reinforce this message. The school has its own in-school Police Liaison Officer. There is also close contact with the local community and there is representation on the local Police Panel by an Assistant Principal.
|Individual Liberty||At Lyndon School, students are actively encouraged to make independent choices, with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Staff at school educate and provide boundaries for students to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.
Students are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely, for example through e-safety and independent work. Students are encouraged to self-manage – there are no bells used in school and students can choose where in school they go during break times. There is CCTV throughout the school and this helps students feel safe. All members of the Senior Leadership team carry out duties at break times and before and after school in addition to other staff.
Lyndon School has a robust anti-bullying culture and is developing a comprehensive Behaviour for Learning Policy.
|Mutual Respect||Respect is a strong part of Lyndon School; it is one of our underpinning values and an inherent part of our ethos. Students learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect and this is reiterated through its teaching and learning environments.
Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum, in tutor time and in assemblies for all students. This provides the opportunity for students to express their views in a safe environment.
|Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs||This is achieved though equipping students with the ability to understand their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving the opportunities to experience such diversity within the school community. As part of the Religious Education curriculum, messages of tolerance and respect for others are regularly reinforced. Students are provided with the opportunity to visit places of worship as well as engage in events that promote diversity through celebrations of different faiths and cultures.
Additionally, students are actively encouraged to share their faith and beliefs within the school and celebrate festivities throughout the calendar year. The Religious Studies curriculum, which is compulsory for all students, provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures. Assemblies regularly focus on the topics of respect, tolerance and diversity.
Lyndon School strives endlessly to ensure that its students leave with the strongest foundation of values upon which to build a successful life and a successful contribution to our society.
