Design & Technology

In Design and Technology we provide opportunities for the students to develop their capabilities by applying knowledge and understanding when developing ideas, planning, making products and evaluating products.

We develop these skills through activities such as Product analysis, focused practical tasks and ‘design and make’ assignments.

In Year 7 we cover basic drawing skills, practical work with pewter and MDF in the workshop, electronics and surface printing and stitching in textiles.

In Year 8 we investigate existing products to inform our ideas, practical work with pine in the workshop, electronics and pattern making and stitching in textiles.

In Year 9 we provide a range of focused practical tasks to build up the students’ knowledge and experience in preparation for the GCSE specification.  Students experience working independently with wood, metal and plastic in the workshop as well as CAD and electronics in the classroom.

The new GCSE AQA specification is a holistic approach to Design and Technology.  Students will build a foundation of knowledge in all of the specialisms and then select one or two to work with in a controlled assessment project.

The course is divided 50% controlled assessment, 50% examination.  The new specification is available below:
